How to take care of your insoles?

It is necessary to take care of your insoles if you want them to last longer. The lifespan of this type of insoles is about 1 year. You can surely achieve this if they are well cared for.

What are the correct steps to take for the maintenance of orthopaedic insoles?

First of all, it is important to clean your feet. This removes all visible and invisible dirt and makes washing easier.

However, maintenance also means cleaning. Follow these steps to disinfect and clean your insoles without damaging them.

Step 1: Aeration

Aerate your soles. Get into the habit of taking them out of your shoes after each use. This is to allow them to breathe and to release the smell caused by foot perspiration.

Step 2: Washing

The insoles should be washed at least once a month. There are many ways to wash them. However, washing in a washing machine is absolutely prohibited.

Disinfecting wipes

You don't have to look far! If you have disinfectant wipes at home, you can use them to remove bad odours from your shoes. Gently wipe your soles with a wipe and you're done.

Soapy water

Warm water and soap are two simple and effective ingredients to refurbish your insoles.

You can do this by first pouring the water and soap into a bowl. Then mix until you get a foamy, soapy water. Take a sponge or brush and gently scrub the sole. Finally, rinse off the excess water with a clean cloth.

Baking soda

Baking soda is a cleaning product that can be found everywhere.

When washing, you should: put your soles in a container and sprinkle them with bicarbonate, so that it is completely covered. Then let them rest for at least three hours. Finally, remove the soles from the container and shake off any residue. Immediately afterwards, you can put them back in your shoes.

Spirits

This is also a good way to remove dirt and deodorise shoes. To do this, pour the same amount of water and methylated spirits into a mini spray bottle. Spray them with this mixture.

Step 3: Drying

After each wash, the insoles must be dried. Leave them in the open air.

We advise you to put them in a place where they are exposed to the wind and the sun. But be careful not to leave them in the sun for too long. This could cause deformation.

And above all, never dry them with a hair dryer or tumble dryer, as the soles are sensitive to heat. At temperatures above 60°, the heat source could damage them.

What should I avoid doing to maintain my insoles?

To optimise the life of your shoes, it is important to follow these recommendations:

-  Never put them in contact with sea water
-  Avoid using solvents when washing (trichloroethylene, ether, acetone, etc.)
-  When your soles are worn, do not try to tinker with them or patch them up yourself
